All My Children's Books

What have I become?
Selfishness came too late.
Maybe when I was a child
I grew up too fast,
Had no time for selfishness,
Swallowed a chunk of selflessness.
Maybe I've taken to heart
All the children's books have to say:
Be kind.
Be kind.
Be kind.

But kids ought not to be kind
No matter how many children's books
There could ever be,
Kids are selfish
To be kind is only for the grown ups

So have I grown up too fast
When I was six
To be this foolishly kind?

I say sorry to my six year old self,
I should have scolded her,
"Don't give that. That's for yourself."

I wish I was a little selfish when I was six
Nobody will get hurt
Nobody won't understand

If I say it now,
"Don't give that. That's for yourself,"
People get hurt
People won't understand
All the children's books
Will come blaming:
Be kind.
Be kind.
Be kind.

I wish people allow grown ups to be a little selfish
After all, grown ups ought to understand more than a six year old.

But maybe I was indeed selfish
Since I was six
To have kept fears and blame
All to myself,
"Don't give that. That's for yourself."
Fool.
